We wanted to try kayaking on the river for a long time but didn’t know where and how to organize it. The Rhein is too big and dangerous, the Moselle is quite big as well and we don’t have enough experience for a big river. We found a solution – a kayaking tour on the Saar! In this post, I will explain why it is good for beginners and how to do it.
Kanu-tour on the Saar
The Saar is a beautiful and calm river located in the northeastern France and western Germany, not so far from Trier. We chose this river because it is not so broad like the Rhein and the Moselle.
Several companies offer kayaking trips there. We went kayaking with Kanu SaarFari in Schoden because their tours can be easily booked online and we found good descriptions of these trips on the website. It is important to know that tours have to be booked in advance if you want to rent a kayak on a weekend. We booked it two weeks before the tour and had bad luck with the weather. It was warm but rainy 🙂 But we did it anyway because we go hiking a lot and have appropriate clothes for any weather.
We came to Schoden with a car and rented a tandem kayak (there also options for 3 or 4 persons). In the beginning, it was a preparation meeting, during which we got a map, lifejackets, paddles, an explanation of the route and some advice. You go on the trip on your own, without a guide. it is not difficult because the route is very simple. Basically, you just paddle around the big island.
The route was easy but not boring! It is located in the national park where we saw many birds, water plants and flowers. We were paddling through the forest, near vineyards and nice traditional houses. The water was very clean and calm.
I would highly recommend this tour for everyone who is looking for a small weekend adventure.
Lunch in beautiful Saarburg
After we finished kayaking trip, we decided to go for lunch in the village nearby. Luckily, we ended up in Saarburg. A very beautiful and authentic small town where you can not only have a nice dinner but also make a walking tour around the city.
Saarburg and kayaking trip on the Saar could be also good combined with the visit of Luxembourg, which is about one hour drive away.
