What to do on the autumn weekend near Stuttgart? Visit Pumpkin Festival – “Kürbisausstellung” – in Ludwigsburg! Don’t think that it is boring. Actually, it is a beautiful open-air space full of art and interesting foodie experience.
Ludwigsburg itself is a nice place to visit, especially on a sunny day. It is a huge park with a palace, gardens and German fairytale route, which located only 15 km from Stuttgart and can be easily reached by car or train. We spent there a good time with our friends who live in the area.
Pumpkin festival in Ludwigsburg: perfect autumn mood
During September and October, Ludwigsburg became home for more than 400.000 of pumpkins. Every year the exhibition is dedicated to a special theme. In 2018 it was “Forest”. Many figures are made of these colorful vegetables.
Giant pumpkin sculptures look beautiful and a little bit crazy. We love that Germans always organize nice events around seasonal products. That makes every time of the year really special.
We wonder, what will they do with all these pumpkins at the end? Maybe, will cook the world’s largest soup.
Every weekend special events take place at the festival: sometimes they carve pumpkins, the other days paddle in gigantic hollowed-out gourds on Castle Lake, celebrate Halloween, or organize some educational events for kids.
Pumpkin market and funny food
At this Kürbisausstellung we learned that many unexpected dishes can be made from pumpkin: prosecco, ice cream, veggie burgers, snacks with cinnamon and sugar, and other delicious food creations.
There is also a market where you can buy many different types of squash and try them too. We bought some for food and decoration. All that sets a great mood for the autumn!
Pumpkin festival in Blühendes Barock Ludwigsburg takes place till the 4th of November 2018. It is still a chance to visit a pumpkin fest this year or plan it for the next one. The park is open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Dogs are allowed!
PS: we saw that in December Ludwigsburg will turn into a pretty Christmas village. Don’t miss it if you will be around Stuttgart.
