Many people don’t bring their dogs to the beach vacation. A long way, plane, not many pet-friendly hotels or beaches, hot weather… It is not an easy thing to organize. However, we don’t want to leave Scout alone for two or three summer weeks and try to plan as many trips with her as possible. Already for two years in a row, we travel together to Spain and spend a great time with our big family and a dog in a fishing village near Barcelona.
From Germany to Spain with a car
The first question to answer – how to get from Germany to Spain with a dog? We don’t fly with Scout because it would be too much stress for her. Our option is to go with a car. It is a long but very beautiful way. We drive through Germany, Switzerland, and southern France and stop for the night in Provence.
We see stunning mountains in Switzerland and amazing lavender fields in France that are fully in bloom in June and July. We make stops and explore new places on the way. For example, we spent one evening in beautiful Avignon. On our way, we also visit lavender fields and fruit markets in Provence. The way to Spain is already an adventure!
Charming fishing village Arenys de Mar
In Spain, we stay in a small fishing village of Arenys de Mar. Only 40 minutes from Barcelona and almost no tourists. Large empty beaches (especially during the week) and fishing harbor. Traditional market and local shops. Nice restaurants with delicious seafood. Many-many dogs (just because Spanish people love them). The place is so authentic that almost nobody speaks English there (so we have to learn a little bit of Spanish).
Together with our Russian family, we rent a big house that is located in the city center but only 5 minutes away from the beach. Dogs are allowed in the house and it is for free. We already rented this house twice and hope to do it again in the future. It is a traditional old Catalan house with a nice patio and pleasantly cool rooms even on very hot days.
Small tip: it is much cheaper to rent houses or apartments on https://www.spain-holiday.com than on Airbnb.
We don’t stay directly in Barcelona because it is overcrowded and obviously doesn’t fit for the dogs during hot summer months. Arenys is quiet but not boring. In the town, we attend many local events like festivals, carnivals, and fairs. I love Spain for this wonderful atmosphere of endless Fiesta!
Can dogs go on beaches in Spain?
Yes! But with some restrictions. In Spain, dogs are not allowed to visit the beach in the summer from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. At least, in Arenys de Mar. The rules could be different, depending on the beach.
But it is totally ok because it is so hot that Scout is not interested to be there during the day. Like other dogs there, Scout goes to the sea every morning and every evening. It is the best doggy-time to play, run and bathe. Additionally, in Arenys de Mar they have a special dog beach, which can be visited with pets any time for free (located at the end of the “normal” beach) in the direction of the train station.
So, a great beach vacation with a dog is possible! It is a lot of fun. For sure, not all the destinations are open for us right now because we are not ready to fly or to drive for more than two days but many great places in Spain, Italy and France are easily reachable by car and fit very good for a summer holiday with a pet.
